Welcome to The Gower Apothecary in the beautiful Gower Peninsula in Swansea.
We can can be found at the Gower Heritage Centre where the old apothecary shop is the base for a fascinating research project known as Medicine, Magic and Myth.
Our project seeks to find out how the people of Gower have in the past sought cures for ill health, dating from the 1600s right up to the early 20th century. Themes we are exploring include herbalists, folk medicine, and the relationship with apothecaries, travelling 'cures' salesmen and doctors and midwives, both in Gower, Swansea and further afield.
Medicine, Magic and Myth is also exploring the folklore surrounding keeping oneself healthy; it is looking at folk medicine where recipes have been past down through the generations, the use of protective charms to help keep sickness at bay and the supersitions surrounding ill health and cures.
The Gower Apothecary is where we showcase our research. it is also the base for workshops, events and talks where we can share our findings with the public and invite people to join us in learn about the wonderful, fun things you can do with medicinal plants.
As part of the project we have an on site Apothecary Garden. The herbs and medicinal plants which are grown are used in the activities we do. They also provide herbs for the Centre and allow visitors to experience the aromas and sights of some of the most common plants used in culinary and medical recipes.
